Review originally posted at http://www.teethofthedivine.com by Erik Thomas

Though some may consider The East coast and Florida the main stays of US death metal, but for the home of technical, brutal death metal, you need to consider that in California there are such amazing death metal acts as Deeds of Flesh, Vile, Brain Drill, Decrepit Birth, Odious Mortem and Severed Savior, who after five years have finally released the follow up to Brutality is Law.

Personally, I thought Brutality Is Law was a pretty standard Unique Leader affair, but on the Willowtip released follow up, Severed Savior have appeared to make a Decrepit Birth like development and evolution in their already technical brutal sound. Like Decrepit Birth, Severed Savior also recruited an Odious Mortem member to help out, vocalsit Anthony Trapani, he along with the addition of Mike Gilbert on Guitars to the core of bassist Murray Fitzpatrick and drummer Troy Fullerton appears to have added some flare and memorability to Servile Insurrection.

Like Psycroptic’s Ob(Servant) earlier this year, and Decrepit Birth’s Diminishing Between Worlds, Servile Insurrection simply raises the bar for what can be done with technical/brutal death metal nowadays. Stupefying complexity melds with pummeling brutality and even some unexpected tangents (i.e end of opener “Questions”, “Servile Insurrection”). However, while the band has musically evolved and developed some truly jaw dropping music, and even melodies, the lyrics not penned by Trapani appear to revert back to 8th grade (”Fecalphilliac”). Musically though, the likes of “Inverted and Inserted”, “Rewards of Cruelty”, “Fuck the Humans”, “Acts of Sedition”, “Spoils of War” and the closing title track are at times, simply jaw dropping in their execution, heaviness and complexity. Even interlude “Intervallo del Tradimento” is superbly done. And whereas some of Ob(Servant)’s tracks overstayed their welcome, Severed Savior keep all their assaults in the 3-4 minute range.

The only downside to this spectacular addition to 2008s already superb death metal releases s that, partially to the punishing but familiar Zach Ohren production and the swapping of members, some of these bands sound a little similar, and frankly playing this side by side to say, Odious Mortem’s Cryptic Implosion, it was difficult to tell which was which.

Expulsion from The Netherlands plays guitar-oriented thrash metal: raging, highly aggressive with their own musical approach. Blending influences from the late 80s speed and thrash metal and early 90s death metal, combined with high-pitched guitars, over-the-top string-skipping - guitar riffs and unrelenting energetic power, Expulsion moves in for the kill!

"Northern California extremists, Rings of Saturn, have launched their brand new Rotting Graphics designed Myspace layout. Their debut full length album, 'Embryonic Anomaly', is now available and can be purchased directly from the band. Pricing and payment details are available on the band's Myspace page. 'Embryonic Anomaly' was produced, engineered, mixed and mastered by Bob Swanson at Mayhemenness Studios in Sacramento, CA and features artwork by Tony Koehl (The Black Dahlia Murder, Dismal Lapse). Details for a digital album release are currently being finalized.

Prior to recording the new album, Rings Of Saturn had one pre-production song on their page, entitled 'Abducted'. The track set a precedent of sorts for fans, displaying what the band was capable of, but ultimately served as nothing more than a teaser of what was to come. At midnight on March 28th, 2010 the band unleashed 3 scathingly shredtastic new tracks on their Myspace page. The new songs racked up over 1,000 plays within the first 24 hours of being posted and maintained a consistent hit rate, leading to a culmination of over 10,000 plays within the first week. While those numbers may not be staggering in comparison to more established bands, they definitely manage to speak volumes for an as yet unsigned band like Rings Of Saturn.

Adding to their list of accomplishments, Rings Of Saturn have managed to impress members of Tennessee's extreme metal titans, Whitechapel (Metal Blade) as well as Northern California shredders, Conducting From The Grave (Sumerian), gaining praise and positive support from both bands. Rings Of Saturn is also now being co-managed by Anthony Delgado (Loudside.com/RebelPyro Management) and Zach Householder (Whitechapel).

The album is now complete, but their work is far from over. On top of continuing to heavily promote 'Embryonic Anomaly', Rings of Saturn have also been rehearsing feverishly in order to prepare themselves for the road, and will be making their live debut this June in Sacramento, CA alongside fellow Northern California tech/progressive noisecore metallers, Journal.

Though young and somewhat inexperienced, Rings of Saturn's drive and determination remain steadfast. With a rapidly expanding fanbase and their Myspace page racking up plays in the tens of thousands, Rings Of Saturn have managed to pique the interest of several labels, serving as a testament to the fact that the band's DIY promotion efforts coupled with a constant push from their newly acquired Management team is certainly paying off."

Metallum-Squash Bowels

Metallum Review-
"Why hasn’t this album been reviewed yet is just beyond my comprehension. It’s a shame that every week countless worthless albums are thrown out in the market that get tons of reviews despite being utter piece of crap but albums like Grindvirus get overlooked so easily. Honestly albums like this release after years. The band has been categorized under the genre of goregrind but this album is pure grindcore with no horrible pitch-shifted vocals or any other nauseating noises whatsoever. Despite being a huge grindcore fan none of the offerings from the godfathers of grindcore Napalm Death and Carcass has been my cup of tea but ironically the bands those two bands spawned have often been up my alley. Squash Bowels is one of those bands that clicked with me instantly the first time I heard them. They are not a new band and have been around since 1994 but not many people are aware of their existence.

These guys sometimes trio sometimes quartet definitely know how to fucking grind your mind and body into chucks and pieces. Grindvirus is 28 minutes of catchy grooving grindcore spread out over 14 ear splitting tracks. The band plays a more modern and groove-laden brand of grind. Rather than relying solely on speed and intensity, Squash Bowels focus more on writing good songs and playing them well. There’s nothing sloppy about this effort, every song is crafted with a purpose and played with style.

The music has a heavy death metal feel to it; very heavy, very deliberate and punishing with deep growling snarls and occasional high-pitched throaty screams leading the attack with frenzied drumming and top notch earth shaking shredding throughout all 14 tracks. Vocals that are divided into clear growls and high pitch screams are as brutal and hate-fueled as ever and Artur’s bass playing has never sounded better; his basslines play a prominent role in the band’s sound and provide thick backup to constant blasting riffs. Drummer is like an animal behind the kit, bashing away at top speed when it calls for it and slowing things down when needed. Andrzej’s shredding takes the band to an entirely new level and I think his influence gives the band a more technical sound and he really pushes everyone else to match his skill. The songs range from one and a half to over two minutes and have grind sections and blast parts perfectly placed in them. Songs like Sheep Dag, Shit Onself and Bacterial Fertiliser have some of the catchiest and awesome riffs. Production is absolutely stunning with all the instruments sounding amazingly balanced and crystal clear. From time to time the music does get a little stagnant and monotonous, but overall this is one of the absolute finest grindcore albums I’ve heard in a long time. Don’t come into Grindvirus expecting amazing technicality or gore-drenched slab of brutality. This album is all about the simple catchiness that will leave you wanting for more.

This is definitely one of the best albums I’ve heard in ’09 and will be on my short list for album of the year and it’s been spinning continuously in my CD player since it came out. This is by far my favorite style of grindcore and these guys pull it off incredibly well. Get this one, play it fucking loud, and watch everyone race to get out of the way."
